Cisco CCNA Routing and Switching ICND2 200-101 Official Cert Guide, Academic Edition 1st Edition

Good Book but not as good as the 100-101 book that was released prior.

Gets in too depth with all of the topics. Great section on troubleshooting. Does not just skim the subjects. Loved the first CCNET that the author wrote. This is just as great. A must have for CCNA certification.

CCNA 200-101 Academic EditionThe first thing I noticed about this book is its weight. It’s over 750 pages, but feels like a book half its size. The paper feels thin yet sturdy. Flipping through the book, I liked the use of color. It could easily have been overdone, but it is used appropriately, and the color helps break things up and highlight the important information. It gives a less cluttered look and makes for a more enjoyable read. The diagrams reminded me of the familiar PowerPoint and Visio drawings I work with everyday. Of course, it doesn’t matter how pretty the book is if the content isn’t there.Cisco defines the topics for the course, and this book does a good job of logically grouping them. The author does a good job breaking down each topic into sections and explaining each clearly.Odom has the ability to explain complicated topics simply and clearly. Too often, writers use terms and concepts that they haven’t defined yet to explain a new concept. I find myself flipping forward or googling to figure out what they are talking about. It could be even worse in a book like this, which is the second part of a series, but the author doesn’t fall into that trap. Odom reviews the underlying concepts and technology, before moving on to the subject of the chapter. For example, in the chapter on troubleshooting IPv6 routing, he could have easily just said “if you don’t remember IPv6, go back to the ICND1 book and review.” Instead, he reviews the IPv6 address format and configuration tasks before getting to the actual troubleshooting content. This helps the flow of your reading and helps you learn without a lot of interruptions.To see how well a subject is presented, without being prejudiced by my own knowledge, I skipped ahead to the EIGRP for IPv6 chapter. In over 20 years, I’ve never worked at a shop that used EIGRP and I only remembered it long enough to pass the cert tests. After reading the chapter, without any prior knowledge of EIGRP v6, I was able to understand the basics of how the routing protocol works and how to configure it. Of course, you can google plenty of whitepapers on the subject, but they are usually deep dives and much too technical to be an introduction to a subject. Read the book first. Once you have the basics down, you can dig deeper into the subjects.I have to admit, I am a bit of a fan of Odom’s books. It would have been nice if I had them when I was starting out. This book is easy to read, well organized, and covers the material well. And make sure you don’t skip the notes in the green boxes. Most tech books have “important” notes in their margins, but I found many of these are very useful to real world situations, not just passing the test.

This book is a good resource for those studying for ICND2. I am glad they have updated the graphics, these appear to be brand new, re-worked graphics for Cisco equipment (for previous versions, it appeared as though the author's team just recycled graphics from version to version...).The IPv6 routing sections are quite comprehensive, thankfully. Also, in this new edition, troubleshooting sections were added for switching and routing.The only section that I feel is lacking is the WAN coverage, although the materials discussed may be the only items covered on the exam objectives.Overall, this is a good resource for those studying for ICND2, a great companion to the CCENT/ICND book.

This is more than just a textbook and study guide. It will join the other members of my career reference library as well. This book covers the material for the new CCNA exam, ICND1 200-101. I like the way the book is laid out. It has lots of colors and diagrams which make it an easy read. Each chapter is followed by a Summary, Review Questions (answers are provided), a review of the key topics, and a definition review of key terms. Command reference tables are also included with those chapters that cover commands. These make nice cheatsheets.A DVD is provided with this book that contains the following study tools:• lists and tables from the chapters that are only partially completed which allows you to complete them from memory.• additional practice problems for some of the chapters. These are great.• simulated ICND2 and CCNA exams using the Pearson IT Certification Practice Test Exam Engine which works well on Windows 8.1. This simulator gives you lots of practice just as if you were taking the exam.• lite version of the CCNA Network Simulator from Pearson gives you valuable hands on training without the need for actual equipment. It a good starting point but is lacking information that is asked of you on the CCNA exam. It might be OK for the ICDN-1 exam but I'm not sure. If you do purchase the 2 books Cisco CCNA and Cisco CCENT / CCNA, you might want to look for a simulator that are more accurate to real world scenarios.

This book is probably my savor for my first ever Cisco course. The cd-rom is awesome. Has some many helpful tips and tricks. Very descriptive
