ExcelVBAMacrosBook

VBA and Macros for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 has been very insightful and easy to comprehend. It covers a wide range of topics and walks you into applications. Chapter 21 on Access connections was for 2003 (mdb) and I was expecting 2007 (accdb) but research on the web advanced that issue. I am pleased and recommend it.

not what i expected

a book that is beyond professional level, probably very good for an expert but not what it was described to do. instead of helping me out, it confused me even more

VBA, what is that?

I had not been able to understand how to create a macro, now with this excellent reference I have made several macros without troubles and I have saved a lot of time for making reports at work.

Excelent Book for a Specialized Topic

This book is well done. It covers what most books say "is beyond the scope of this book." Eighteen Nineteen Twenty

VBA and Macros for Excell 2007

I've really enjoyed this book. I had a very basic understanding of VBA prior to purchasing this book; and while I certainly wouldn't consider myself an advanced user at this point, the book has been wonderful at explaining the syntax of code. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to sit down and read the book all the way through. If I had, I believe I would be a better programmer for having done it. Mainly, I use the book for reference when I'm coding macros at work. The book is laid out well so when I run into an issue it's easy to flip to the index and find roughly what I'm looking for. The online component of the book is nice as well - adding even further resources to users. Overall, I would recommend the book to anyone looking to learn more about VBA or to those simply wanting a reference guide.

Where was the editor?

As an already experienced VBA and macro user I bought this book to teach myself a few new things. I have several complaints about this book.1. This book provides a link to download the files accompanied in the text. All the files have code already written. How does one learn from this? I copied data the worksheet data from the files provided into a new workbook and wrote the macros myself in the VBA editor. Almost every example from the book has errors and almost every example from the book I spent time debugging to see what went wrong.2. The errors and discrepancies!!! As mentioned above there are more than just a few errors in the text. When comparing the examples in the text to the code provided in the downloaded files there was countless discrepancies. Where was the editor at??Most of my time with this book has been spent debugging the code provided in the text.I would not recommend this book if you are a beginner or are new to VBA. If you decide to get this book, expect more of your time to spent head scratching rather then learning. If you have experience than this book is a useful tool but expect flaws, and lots of them. There is a lot of useful information provided in this book and I have learned from it but at a frightfully slow pace.

Just adequate

I find the book simply adequate.I spent a while looking through books on VBA for Excel 2007 and I chose the Jelen/Syrstad title because is was not one of big fat programming guides. I feel there aren't enough examples provided in the book and the examples from their website are mostly a repeat of the book. I find working with Excel to develop a automatic report a daunting task; the built-in help is nearly worthless, the on-line help is a hit or miss, and that's after I've looked through the book.I guess I'll be looking for a big fat programming guide with more chart development and, hopefully, one that covers Data Connections and SQL.I have carefully read through the first 12 chapters before I started my project and I find the information easy to understand and straight forward. If, however, one tries to develop code outside of the examples provided, the frustration level increases.

This book won't turn you into a VBA programmer

This is a well written informative book, but promises more than it delivers. I have read it cover to cover and read some chapters over and over again. It has helped me cobble together small sections of code which do some quite impressive things.I now understand more written VBA code. But I still haven't a clue how to efficiently programme in VBA!You have a task you want to automate. How do you turn the task into VBA code? a) Look at the examples in the book - unfortunately some are not explained very well b) Use the macro recorder - fine if the task just involves a number of repetitive steps which don't need to change in different situations c) Google it - fine if you can describe the task correctly and some one else has already worked out how to do something similar d) Lots of trial and error, going back and forth between different pages in the book and Microsoft VBA help pagesMaybe I was expecting too much from this book, and no one has written a book that can teach me how to efficiently programme in VBA.

Take your pick

You'll need a pick to dig through this book!I bought this to enhance my ability with VBA Macros and I must admit that I haven't yet got to grips with it. Nicely segregated into broad topics, but I feel that you really need your computer to hand to try things out and even as an experienced IT'er (since the 70's)I do find some of the language rather jargony which makes it harder to read and absorb. Much rather have "and now, what about doing XYZ?, here's a bit of code to do just that, now this is how it works and if you want to use the core instructions somewhere else you just need to remember to do this, this and this."

Ready for the upgrade.

If it is as good as the previous version there will be no problems. As i haven't yet upgraded I cannot comment.
